Cooking Up Literacy Tip: Some Things Take Time
Saturday, November 7 at 11:00 a.m.
Gwinnett Community Resource Center, Bethany Church Road, Snellville
This session is full! Thank you, families. The Resource Center is keeping a waiting list; add your name through the Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation catalog. We’ll send a reminder to registered families as the date gets closer.
Not everything good happens right away. A seed needs time to sprout, a story needs time to unfold, and a tiramisu needs time in the refrigerator before it’s ready to share. This week’s tip is simple: some things need time, and the waiting doesn’t have to be wasted.
While we wait, we can do something productive. We can make art. We can get up and move. We can sit down with a good book and simply rest. The pause is part of the recipe.
Try it at home. The next time dinner or dessert needs to chill, bake, or simmer, let your child set a timer, pick a book, and read until it goes off. Waiting becomes reading time, and reading time becomes a habit.
What we’ll do on November 7
Together we’ll make a kid-friendly Tiramisu with Chocolate Milk and Chamomile Tea. Then, while our dessert chills, we’ll turn to a fun literacy activity: creating art as an act of kindness for senior citizens at a local center who won’t be able to join us. When the tiramisu is ready, we’ll gather for a taste test.
One more tip for home: the flavors really come together overnight. Cover your tiramisu, return it to the refrigerator, and enjoy it again the next day. It’s worth the wait.
If you’re on the waiting list, here’s some good news: waiting is exactly what this week’s tip is about. Look for your own “waiting time” opportunities. Do something good for someone else. Do something good for yourself. Or simply relax with a good book. And keep reading, because there’s another free event coming soon.
Didn’t get a spot? Join us for Chocolate Explorers on December 5
Mark your calendar for our free Chocolate Explorers family event on Saturday, December 5, from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m., also at the Gwinnett Community Resource Center. Families will carry a “passport” through five hands-on stations, collecting a stamp at each one as they explore the story of chocolate from plant to treat. Spots are limited, so register early through the Parks and Recreation catalog.
Calling all volunteers
We need help getting the community room ready for Chocolate Explorers! We’re looking for:
Middle and high school students who love art and decorating, to create artwork and displays that bring the five stations to life for our youngest learners
Students and adults who enjoy working with families, to serve as station facilitators on event day
Volunteers will be needed for a few hours before the event to decorate and from about 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on December 5. Service hours are available for students. To join the team, email us at daneellmoore@whatsstirringfoundation.org by November 5, 2026

Thank you, Snellville families, for filling November 7 so quickly. We can’t wait to see you!
