From the Classroom to the Community: Cooking Up Literacy This Saturday

What happens when children are having so much fun learning that they may not even realize how much literacy practice is taking place?

That is part of the idea behind Cooking Up Literacy, the signature family-learning program of What’s Stirring Family Foundation.

Through Mentors & Scholars at the Table, What’s Stirring Family Foundation is now leading a family literacy initiative in partnership with the Spalding County Collaborative for Families and Children and Divine Reach Counsel and Education, Inc. The program brings Cooking Up Literacy into Atkinson Elementary School twice each month, where kindergarten scholars participate in engaging language and literacy experiences.

A special part of the program is the role of trained volunteer mentors. These mentors work alongside young kindergarten scholars, guiding them through age-appropriate language and literacy activities, conversation, vocabulary, and reading practice. Each session then ends with a simple no-bake cooking activity, giving children a chance to use what they have learned in a fun, hands-on way.

The learning continues at home, too. Families receive reminders encouraging 20 minutes of language and literacy activities, six days a week.

One Atkinson Elementary parent recently shared:

“They are going GREAT! My child absolutely loves it, and I do as well!”

That is exactly what we hope to see: children learning, families participating, and literacy becoming part of everyday life.

And this Saturday, your family can experience some of that fun, too!

Join us at the Gwinnett County Community Resource Center on Bethany Church Road in Snellville for a special Cooking Up Literacy family experience.

This time, families will create a Rainbow Garden Veggie Wrap while reading, talking, moving, discovering new words, learning about ingredients, and cooking together.

The recipe is colorful, hands-on, fun to make—and tasty, too.

Because when children are actively engaged, talking, reading, moving, creating, and having fun, learning can come alive in a whole new way.

We would love to welcome your family this Saturday.

Read Together. Cook Together. Learn Together. Grow Together.
