Read It, Cook It, Enjoy It Together!

📚 Cooking Up Literacy Tip of the Week

Find something your family enjoys reading and read it together.

It can be a favorite picture book, chapter book, poem, song, recipe, or other literacy material. You might read aloud, take turns reading, or listen together using a tool such as Audible.

Then invite your child to read—or reread—a favorite part.

Most importantly, have fun with it!

Try these three simple steps:

READ IT.

Enjoy the words together.

TALK ABOUT IT.

Ask what was funny, surprising, interesting, or memorable.

CONNECT IT.

If the reading mentions food, a meal, a garden, a restaurant, or an ingredient, use it as an opportunity to explore food together.

Maybe you'll look up an unfamiliar ingredient. Maybe you'll talk about where a food comes from. You might even find a recipe and head into the kitchen together.

That's Cooking Up Literacy!

🥣 Want to Take the Fun One Step Further?

Join us for a FREE Cooking Up Literacy family experience on Saturday, September 5, at the Gwinnett County Community Resource Center on Bethany Church Road, formerly One Stop Centerville.

This won't be a sit-and-listen session.

Families will be:

🎵 Singing

📖 Reading

🏃 Moving

🔎 Solving a mystery

💬 Talking and learning together

🥣 Cooking

And this time, we'll create a delicious Honey Cocoa Yogurt Parfait!

🔎 There's a Mystery to Solve!

Daniel and Alonna have a fruit mystery, and they'll need help from our families to solve it.

Here's your only clue:

Do you really know what makes a berry a berry?

Don't look up the answer yet!

Come ready to investigate, move around, make predictions, and discover something that may surprise the entire family.

📖 Yes, Cooking Is Literacy Too!

Families will also use reading for a very real purpose—making something delicious.

Children will read and talk about ingredients, explore new vocabulary, and use a recipe to help prepare their parfait.

When children read a recipe, they're not reading just because someone assigned it.

They're reading because they need the information.

What ingredients do we need?

What do we do first?

What comes next?

And at the end, they get to taste what their reading helped them create!

That's literacy coming to life.

❤️ Learning Is Better Together

Cooking Up Literacy is designed for families to participate together.

Parents, grandparents, caregivers, children, and siblings can read, talk, sing, move, investigate, cook, laugh, and learn alongside one another.

You don't need to create an elaborate lesson at home to support literacy.

Sometimes it's sharing a favorite story.

Sometimes it's singing the words to a song.

Sometimes it's talking about an interesting new word.

And sometimes it's opening a cookbook and making something delicious together.

Read Together. Cook Together. Learn Together. Grow Together.
