There is something special about the excitement of a new school year. New backpacks. New friendships. New opportunities. At What's Stirring Family Foundation, we believe it's also the perfect time to remind families that some of the best learning happens together—around the kitchen table.
This weekend, we're excited to bring Cooking Up Literacy to three community locations, where children and families will discover that reading, healthy eating, financial literacy, and STEM can come together in fun and meaningful ways.
Friday: Where Literacy Meets Financial Confidence
Our weekend begins at Chase Bank in Dacula, where families will embark on an engaging adventure that starts with food and ends with lifelong skills.
Children will explore the stories behind the ingredients they'll be using before rolling up their sleeves for a hands-on cooking experience that brings reading to life in a way that's exciting, interactive, and delicious. The learning doesn't stop there! Our friends at Chase Bank will continue the fun by helping children and families discover that understanding money can be just as engaging as creating a healthy recipe.
As families prepare for the first day of school, we're especially grateful to Chase Bank for going above and beyond by providing every participating family with a free backpack filled with school supplies. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to Costco, whose generous support is providing the cooking supplies that help make these memorable hands-on experiences possible.
Saturday: Reading, Cooking...and a Little Science!
The excitement continues Saturday morning at the Gwinnett Community Resource Center on Bethany Church Road in Snellville.
Families will enjoy another exciting Cooking Up Literacy experience featuring two delicious recipes, each designed to make learning active and enjoyable. One recipe even includes a surprise STEM connection that encourages children to think like young scientists while having fun in the kitchen.
We're thankful to the Gwinnett Community Resource Center for providing both the event space and the food that make this family experience possible. Their partnership helps create a welcoming place where children can learn, explore, and build confidence as the new school year begins.
Ending the Weekend by Giving Back
Our final stop will be the Lawrenceville Boys & Girls Club, where we'll celebrate the joy of reading by distributing 30 copies of our family literacy cookbook to local families.
This special giveaway is made possible through the generous financial support of United Bankshares, whose investment will help families continue reading, cooking, and learning together long after the weekend is over.
More Than a Program—A Community Coming Together
What makes Cooking Up Literacy so special isn't simply the recipes or the activities. It's watching families laugh together, children discover something new, and community partners unite around a shared belief that every child deserves opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed.
As we prepare for another exciting school year, we're reminded that strong readers, healthy families, and confident learners are built one experience at a time—and none of it would be possible without the incredible support of partners like Chase Bank, Costco, Gwinnett Community Resource Center, United Bankshares, and the Boys & Girls Club.
Whether you're joining us this weekend or following along from afar, thank you for being part of our journey. We can't wait to share the smiles, the stories, and the memories that will be made.
Because at What's Stirring Family Foundation, we're doing more than preparing recipes—we're stirring up brighter futures for children and families, one experience at a time.
