What Makes Cooking Up Literacy So Special?

To every family who joined us on Friday, thank you for making this event so memorable.

There is something special that happens when families slow down long enough to spend time together.

We watched parents and children cook together, laugh together, learn together, and even sing together. In that environment, learning happens naturally.

Children expanded their vocabulary as they talked about ingredients. They explored science while creating a Blueberry Chocolate Chip Parfait. They learned that healthy food can also be delicious. They discovered money-smart ideas from our partners at Chase Bank. Most importantly, they experienced the joy of learning together as a family.

That is why family literacy matters.

In a world filled with busy schedules, Cooking Up Literacy creates space for families to connect, learn, and make memories that last long after the last bite of parfait.

The comments from families reminded us why this work is so meaningful:

"It's family fun!"💙 One mom created a new word—INSPO—because the experience was so inspiring.💚 Another parent called it "absolutely amazing." She wasn't planning to stay for the entire event, but after calling her child's baseball coach to say they would be late because they were at a literacy event, she decided it was worth every minute and wants to attend future events.💛 One parent described the experience as informative.🧡 Another family traveled nearly an hour to participate after learning about the event.

Those words remind us that we're creating more than an activity—we're creating experiences families remember.

A heartfelt thank you to Chase Bank for opening your doors, providing the event space, backpacks filled with school supplies, and the food that made this experience possible. Special thanks to Ms. Indirah Gutierrez for leading the financial literacy experience and teaching children about earning and spending money in a fun, engaging way. As we walked out the door, her parting words were, "We'll do it again next year." We couldn't be more excited.
