Why Co-Authoring Books with My Children Is One of the Greatest Gifts We Share

The journey matters most.
The journey matters most.

When people ask me why I write books with my children, they often assume it's simply about creating a finished product. While I'm certainly proud of each cookbook we publish, the books themselves are only part of the story. The greatest gift has been the journey of writing together.

As a parent, I naturally become the teacher. I guide my children through the writing process by asking questions, providing direct instruction, encouraging research, and observing how they think and grow. Every page becomes an opportunity to strengthen their communication, creativity, and confidence.

But something unexpected happens along the way.

I also become the learner.

Writing alongside my children has allowed me to discover gifts I might never have fully recognized otherwise. I've watched their vocabulary blossom, admired their curiosity during research, laughed at their unique sense of humor, and been amazed by the creativity and insight they possess at such a young age. These are treasures that can easily go unnoticed in the busyness of everyday life. Writing has given us the gift of slowing down long enough to truly see one another.

Co-authoring books with children—and especially with your own children—is not easy. It requires patience, dedication, flexibility, and perseverance. Life constantly presents competing responsibilities, making it seem at times as though the book will never be finished. Yet we continue because the work itself matters.

To me, this is one of the greatest legacies I can leave my children.

When people think about leaving an inheritance, they often think of financial assets. Those certainly have value. But I also believe in leaving behind experiences, memories, skills, and shared accomplishments that no one can ever take away. Writing together has become one of those priceless investments.

Writing is one of the hardest things many of us will ever do. It demands both the mind and the heart. It is exciting, exhausting, tedious, and deeply rewarding—all at the same time.

The process reminds me of the spinning classes I took years ago. During each class, the workout felt grueling and physically demanding. Yet when it was over, I always walked away feeling stronger and incredibly fulfilled. Writing with my children feels much the same way. There are moments when the work is difficult, but the joy that follows is worth every challenge.

I treasure the time we spend cooking together, but I value our writing time even more. Around the table we make recipes. Around our manuscripts we make memories.

Three books. One family. Countless memories.
Three books. One family. Countless memories.

On Monday, June 29, we will release our third cookbook, What's Stirring: Fun, Food, & Family All Around the World. It brings me great joy to share the finished book with families everywhere. Yet as fulfilling as publishing is, the writing process has been just as meaningful.

As we wrapped up this book, my children were already reminding me that one more cookbook remains to complete our series. Their excitement made me smile. Like a commencement ceremony, finishing one chapter isn't really the end—it marks the beginning of a new journey.

I look forward to taking that next voyage with them.

At the heart of the What's Stirring Family Foundation is a simple belief: strong communities begin with strong families. We believe in family time, learning together, creativity, bonding, and fun. The best way for me to support families in my community is to first practice those values within my own home.

My hope is that every page we write and every recipe we share encourages another family to gather around the table, tell stories, create memories, and discover the joy of learning together.

May you enjoy our third cookbook, What's Stirring: Fun, Food, & Family All Around the World. More than anything, I hope it inspires your family to create something meaningful together—because the greatest stories are often the ones we write with the people we love most.
