Cooking Up Literacy: The Final Cooking Club Before Summer Camp

Cooking Up Literacy Before Summer Camp Was a Sweet Success!
The last Cooking Club session before summer camp was filled with smiles, learning, teamwork, and delicious food as students created their very own Blueberry Chocolate Chip Parfaits. From measuring ingredients to layering their parfaits, the experience combined nutrition, math, creativity, and fun in a way the students truly enjoyed.
A Calm, Organized, and Engaging Experience
The cooking experience ran smoothly from start to finish. Students were attentive, excited, and eager to participate. The environment was orderly and positive, allowing everyone to focus, learn, and enjoy the activity together.
The first group included 18 participants, while the second group had 9 students actively join the cooking session. By the end, about 5 additional students stopped by wishing they could participate too, showing just how exciting and inviting the activity had become.
Learning Through Food
Students explored the nutritional benefits of the ingredients they used while preparing their parfaits.
Blueberries
Students learned that blueberries are packed with vitamins and antioxidants that help support brain health and overall wellness. One student proudly reminded everyone not to forget that blueberries are also good for the digestive system. While explaining, the student even used hand motions to show how blueberries help “keep things moving,” bringing laughter and excitement to the group.
Students also discussed how blueberries may help with memory and focus, making them a smart snack choice before school or even before taking a test.
Chocolate
Students learned that chocolate can also support the brain and help improve focus and concentration. They talked about how having a small amount of chocolate along with blueberries before a test might be a good idea because both foods can help provide energy and support brain function.
Granola
One of the most exciting lessons was learning that granola can be a healthier snack option because it is filling and provides energy when hungry.
Bringing Math into the Fun Lab
Cooking became a hands-on math lesson as students worked on:
Measuring ingredients correctly
Converting proportions for their parfaits
Selecting the correct measuring cup
Deciding whether to make 1, 2, 3, or even 4 delicious layers
This allowed students to practice real-world math skills in a fun and practical way.
The Best Part — Eating the Parfaits!
After all the mixing, measuring, and layering, students finally got to enjoy their creations — and the reactions said it all:
“This is so delicious!”
One student even excitedly said:
“Please video tape me!”
The joy and pride on their faces showed how meaningful the experience was for them.
