Everyone Is Someone’s Baby

A moment from GCTE with keynote speaker Gerry Brooks, whose message about humanity and leadership stayed with me.

At a recent Georgia Council of Teachers of English (GCTE) keynote, educator and speaker Gerry Brooks shared a simple line that has stayed with me:

“Everyone is someone’s baby.”

In just a few words, it captured something essential about leadership, education, and how we treat one another. It is a reminder that every person carries dignity and value—before titles, expectations, or outcomes enter the picture.

When we approach our work with this mindset, our perspective shifts. We become more thoughtful with our words. We lead with patience and grace. We recognize that learning, growth, and connection happen best when people feel seen and respected.

This belief guides my work across the spaces I serve. Through Tectonic Village, LLC, it informs how we approach grant work and the creation and publication of books. It also shapes the family literacy and educational experiences supported through What’s Stirring Family Foundation, where the focus remains on learning rooted in connection and care.

When we remember that everyone is someone’s baby, our work stays grounded in humanity. And when humanity leads, purpose follows.
