George Washington Carver once encouraged people to see farming as more than growing crops—it was a way to care for the land, strengthen communities, and create opportunities for future generations. Decades later, Gus Schumacher carried that same spirit forward by championing local farmers and helping connect communities with fresh, healthy foods.
That shared vision continues today.
Through the Georgia SPAN (G-SPAN) Farm to Early Learning initiative, What's Stirring Family Foundation is partnering with All Our Children Childcare Academy to help young children discover where healthy food comes from. Through gardening, hands-on learning, stories, and nutrition activities, children will explore the importance of local farming, fresh fruits and vegetables, and making healthy choices that can last a lifetime.
When children learn to appreciate local food, everyone benefits. Families gain knowledge about healthy eating, local farmers are supported, and communities become stronger and more connected.
How You Can Help Continue the Legacy
The legacies of George Washington Carver and Gus Schumacher remind us that lasting change often begins with simple actions. This week, consider taking one small step:
Visit a local farmers market.
Plant a vegetable, herb, or flower with a child.
Try a new fruit or vegetable together as a family.
Read a book about farming, gardening, or healthy eating.
Thank a local farmer for helping nourish your community.
Every seed planted, every healthy meal shared, and every farmer supported helps cultivate a healthier future. Together, we can continue a legacy of growing not only food, but healthier children, stronger families, and thriving communities.
