Reflection: Small Moments, Meaningful Impact

Every family literacy event reminds me that success is often measured in conversations, smiles, and the moments that happen around the table.
This weekend's Cooking Up Literacy experience welcomed seven families, and every family shared something encouraging. Each one said they learned something new about fruits and that they were more likely to include more fruit in their family's meals. Just as meaningful, families talked about enjoying the opportunity to bond together, have fun, and cook side by side. Those moments are exactly why this work exists.

It was especially rewarding to hear that families enjoyed the overall experience. Two families even shared that they plan to return for future events and invite others to participate. Word-of-mouth is one of the greatest compliments a program can receive because it reflects genuine enthusiasm and trust.
Their written reflections echoed those conversations. One family described the experience as "very informative and fun." Another shared, "I learned a lot of new things!" Others appreciated the opportunity for family connection, calling it an "excellent interactive opportunity for family time" and describing the session as "fun, interactive, and informative." Perhaps most encouraging was hearing one family say they planned to tell another family about the Cooking Up Literacy experience. Moments like these remind me that meaningful learning often spreads one conversation at a time.

As I reflected afterward, I realized there was one moment I would approach differently next time. I would invite Daniel and Alonna to share the story behind the Fruit Face Plate in their own words. They were the ones who came up with the name and the idea of bringing art and healthy food together to create a fun family cooking and eating experience. Their creativity became part of the inspiration for What's Stirring: Fun, Food, & Family the Healthy Way.
Hearing directly from the young creators would have given families an even deeper appreciation for how children's ideas can spark meaningful learning and inspire healthy family traditions. It's something I look forward to incorporating into future Cooking Up Literacy experiences.
The families' feedback affirmed that meaningful learning was taking place:
"Very informative and fun."
"I learned a lot of new things!"
"Excellent interactive opportunity for family time."
"It was fun, interactive, and informative!"
"I will tell another family about today's Cooking Up Literacy Experience."
Reading their reflections reminded me that the greatest impact often comes from creating experiences that families enjoy together and want to share with others.
When I look back on the day, I'll remember seven families learning, laughing, and creating together around the table.
Those are the moments worth building on.
This experience reminded me that our mission is about more than sharing recipes. It is about creating opportunities for families to connect, learn something new, and make lasting memories together. Seeing seven families leave encouraged—and hearing that they want to return and invite others—is a wonderful reminder that small moments can lead to meaningful impact.

A Special Thank You
A heartfelt thank you to Bethany Church Road Community Resource Center for providing the space to host this free Cooking Up Literacy community event. We appreciate the opportunity to bring families together in such a welcoming community setting.
We also extend our sincere appreciation to Kroger for its donation of cooking supplies, which helped make this hands-on family experience possible.
This month's Fruit Face Plate activity was made possible through the support of What's Stirring Family Foundation, whose investment helped provide the food and educational resources that made this family literacy experience possible.
We are grateful for every partner and supporter who helps create meaningful opportunities for families to read, learn, cook, and grow together.
A special thank you to my dear friend, Dawn, whose friendship spans more than 30 years. Although she came simply as a guest, she generously chose to volunteer her time and energy, stepping in wherever help was needed throughout the experience. Your willingness to serve meant more than you know. I sincerely appreciate you and am deeply grateful for your kindness, support, and friendship.
