When One Moment Becomes a Lasting Impact

At What’s Stirring Family Foundation, we believe every child deserves not just a seat in the room—but a moment to shine.
During a recent literacy festival, one young participant eagerly anticipated her chance to take part in our Cooking Up Literacy demonstration—a hands-on experience combining reading, storytelling, and cooking.
Although she was initially selected, only a limited number of participants could be chosen, and she did not have the opportunity to participate that day.
She didn’t get her moment that day—but her story didn’t end there.
Turning a Missed Moment Into Meaningful Impact
After the session, we connected with her and her mother. It was clear how much she had been looking forward to participating.
In that moment, we made a commitment:
We would make it right.
We followed up with the family and created an opportunity for her to experience Cooking Up Literacy at home by providing:
A gift card to cover the cost of ingredients
A recipe card designed for independent learning
A simple ingredient list with links to make shopping easy
Encouragement to engage in a family-centered cooking experience
What could have been a missed opportunity became something more powerful—a personalized experience rooted in confidence, learning, and connection.
A Family Experience That Matters
The impact was immediate and meaningful:
“Riley had a great experience and was excited to share it with her siblings. They had so much fun creating their parfaits together, and the instructions were easy for her to follow independently. As a parent, I appreciated how the activity brought them together and made learning feel natural and enjoyable.”— Parent of Cooking Up Literacy Participant

Why This Work Matters
Cooking Up Literacy is more than a demonstration—it is a model designed to:
Build confidence through reading and doing
Foster family engagement and bonding
Make literacy accessible, interactive, and joyful
Ensure children feel seen, included, and capable
Moments like these matter because they shape how children experience learning—and how families connect through it.
Looking Ahead
This experience reaffirmed our commitment to extending literacy beyond the event space and into the home.
Because meaningful learning doesn’t always happen on stage.
It happens in kitchens, in conversations, and in shared moments between children and their families.
At What’s Stirring Family Foundation, we are committed to creating those moments—intentionally, consistently, and at scale.
If you are a school, library, or community partner interested in bringing Cooking Up Literacy to your community, we would love to connect.
